I seriously wouldn't bother building your own PC these days, not at the low-end. Dell buy the components in such bulk that they can buy them AND assemble them AND ship it to you AND guarantee it for probably less than you can buy the bits. And how much is your time worth, how long will it take to source the components, order them all and assemble them into a PC? -
My gf did this a few months ago - she started with a low-end Dell Vostro box (the slimline 200, in her case, for £199) and then added a load of options (most notably, the higher quality 22" monitor) until she got up to just over 500 pounds including VAT.
